Brief History
St Bede’s Chapel was a small chapel in Newton Hall, County Durham. It first opened in 1970 to serve the growing populations of Newton Hall as well as nearby Pity Me and Framwellgate Moor.
The building was intended to be temporary, until funding and land could be sourced for a more permanent structure. Unfortunately, these hopes were never realised.
In February 2011, it was announced by Bishop Seamus Cunningham, RC Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle that structural issues had been found within the building.
The decision was taken to re-locate the chapels services to St. Godric’s RC Primary School, directly next to the chapel, instead of repairing the building or building a new one. The final service at the original chapel took place on March 7, 2011.
The chapel remains at St Godric’s RC Primary School, with no immediate plans to relocate.
The original chapel was demolished sometime between March 2011 and August 2014. The land remains vacant as of 2021, with no known plans to re-develop. The adjoining car park remains in situ.
Below, you can see Google Street View images of before and after the chapel was demolished. As you can see in the after photograph, you would never have known a chapel stood on the site for over 40 years.
